A man set himself on fire in downtown Calgary Thursday morning as bystanders looked on in horror.
Calgary emergency officials said the 40-year-old man doused himself with a flammable liquid before lighting himself on fire.
"I see some guy, he's in flames, all (over) his body, backpack. I was very scared because all of his body is in flames," witness Fernando Sanchez told CTV Calgary.
Sanchez, who videotaped the incident, said that people tried to help emergency officials put out the flames. An ambulance happened to be driving by the scene as the incident occurred and rushed to try to douse the fire.
The man was taken to hospital with burns to about 40 per cent of his body, including his back, face, hands and legs.
Police have not said why the man lit himself on fire, but a source told CTV Calgary that the man may have been upset because he was due to be deported back to Algeria.
Witness said the man was in front of the Harry Hays building, a federal government building, for a few minutes before setting himself on fire. He had a back pack and a cardboard sign with him.
