Aux Émirats Arabes Unis, 20 % de la population souffre du diabète( Type 1 et Type2) et 3,5 millions de personnes sont touchées par cette maladie chronique dans les pays du Golfe. Dans un séminaire organisé par le Joslin Diabetes Centre, le Dubai Health Authority (DHA) a annoncé la création d’une unité pour développer les thérapies par cellules souches pour soigner les personnes diabétiques.

Dr Laila Al Jasmi, CEO for Health Policy and Strategy at the DHA, told participants at a seminar organised by Joslin Diabetes Centre that stem cell therapy "offers hope for our people and the community around the region." About 20% of the UAE population suffer from the disease, while 3.5 million people across the GCC region are diabetics.
