Mahjoub Salek from Khat Chahid Slams ‘Corruption’ of the polisario, Calls for Supporting Autonomy Plan

The former founding member of the “polisario” separatist movement, Mahjoub Salek, slammed, Monday in New York, “the absolutism” and the “corruption” of the leaders of the “polisario”, while calling on the international community to support the autonomy plan for the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty as the only solution that can put an end to this dispute. Speaking at a meeting of the Committee of 24 of the United Nations, Mr. Salek, who was also a former member of the “political bureau of the polisario”, condemned the “authoritarianism” and the “absolute power” of the leaders of the “polisario” which is based on “tribalism” and the “exclusion” of the true natives of the Sahara. “When I declared my opposition to the abductions, imprisonment and serious violations of human rights, which have affected many of our comrades in the camps, on a tribal and racist basis, it was my turn to to be kidnapped,
” Mr. Salek told the C24 members, noting that he had to spend many years imprisoned without his family knowing anything about his fate. In prison, he added, “I was subjected to the most horrific and unimaginable forms of torture and abuse”. Mr. Salek, who now leads the opposition movement Khat Chahid to the separatist front, explained that he tried to urge the Polisario leaders to dialogue and to “reason” by encouraging them to “start negotiations with Morocco to put an end to this conflict which has lasted too long”. “Our attempt to reform this leadership has failed after almost twenty years of opposition, because the leaders only serve the interests of other parties by continuing to trade in refugees and international aid,” he explained.
Mr. Salek thus called on the international community to “encourage and support” Morocco and “to help it implement the easiest solution to put an end to this long conflict, which is the autonomy of the Sahrawis to manage their lands, wealth and affairs through elected institutions, which enables them to live with dignity under the rule of law”. According to him, the Moroccan autonomy plan “will put an end to the suffering of our people in the camps and will allow them to return to their honorable country, with their heads held high thanks to international guarantees, to participate in the autonomy of the Sahara under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco”.

Nations-Unies (New York) – L’ancien membre fondateur du mouvement séparatiste “polisario”, Mahjoub Salek, a dénoncé, lundi à New York, “l’absolutisme” et la “corruption” des dirigeants du “polisario”, tout en appelant la communauté internationale à soutenir le plan d’autonomie du Sahara sous souveraineté marocaine comme seule solution à même de mettre fin à ce différend.
Prenant la parole lors d’une réunion du Comité des 24 des Nations-Unies, M. Salek, qui était aussi un ancien membre du “bureau politique du polisario”, a décrié “l’autoritarisme” et le “pouvoir absolu” des dirigeants du “polisario” qui repose sur le “tribalisme” et “l’exclusion” des véritables autochtones du Sahara.
“Lorsque j’ai déclaré mon opposition aux enlèvements, à l’emprisonnement et aux violations flagrantes des droits de l’homme, qui ont touché nombre de nos camarades dans les camps, sur une base tribale et raciste, cela a été mon tour d’être kidnappé”, a lancé M. Salek devant les membres du C24, notant qu’il a dû passer de nombreuses années emprisonné sans que sa famille ne sache rien de son sort.
En prison, a-t-il ajouté, “j’ai été soumis aux formes de torture et d’abus les plus horribles et les plus inimaginables”.
M. Salek, qui dirige désormais le mouvement d’opposition Khat Chahid au front séparatiste, a expliqué qu’il a tenté d’inviter les dirigeants du “polisario” au dialogue et à “la raison” en les incitant à “entamer des négociations avec le Maroc pour mettre fin à ce conflit qui n’a que trop duré”.
“Notre tentative de réformer cette direction (ndlr: du polisario) a échoué après près de vingt ans d’opposition, car les dirigeants ne sont que des pions qui servent les intérêts d’autres parties en continuant à faire du commerce de réfugiés et de l’aide internationale”, a-t-il concédé.
M. Salek a ainsi appelé la communauté internationale à “encourager et soutenir” le Maroc et “à l’aider à mettre en œuvre la solution la plus facile à appliquer pour mettre fin à ce long conflit, qui est l’autonomie des Sahraouis pour gérer leurs terres, leurs richesses et leurs affaires par le biais d’institutions élues, ce qui leur permet de vivre dignement dans le cadre de l’État de droit”.
Selon selon, le plan marocain d’autonomie “mettra fin aux souffrances de notre peuple dans les camps et lui permettra de retourner dans son honorable pays, la tête haute grâce aux garanties internationales, pour participer à l’autonomie du Sahara sous la souveraineté du Royaume du Maroc”.
