Thales to implement ticketing system for Algeria’s first metro line
15 November 2007
Thales announced today that it has been awarded a contract by Siemens Transportation Systems to supply the ticketing system for the first metro line in the Algerian capital, Algiers.
The new line is managed by metro operator Entreprise du Métro d'Alger (EMA). Thales will provide a complete integrated ticketing system based on a combination of magnetic stripe and contactless ticketing technology (type B compatible) for the ten stations along the line.
Under the contract, Thales will install entry and exit control gates, ticket dispensing systems for ticket offices and automatic ticket vending machines open to the public.
The 9-km line is the first in the country and will serve ten stations from Haï-el-badr in the east of Algiers to Tafourah Grand Poste in the city centre. There are medium-term plans to extend this first line, which is scheduled to enter service in 2009. "Thales's extensive experience in ticketing systems fully meets our requirements and expectations, making it an important partner in this project. Thales will also make a significant contribution by offering our customer best-in-breed solutions and superior quality of service," commented Didier Roussel, Chairman of Siemens Transportation Systems.
"The customer, EMA, specifically required the most advanced fare collection technologies available for public transport applications, with the capability to scale up to multi-modal ticketing in the future, which is one of Thales's core strengths," said Jean-Louis Olié, Managing Director of Thales Transportation Systems.
The Algerian transport authorities intend to develop interoperability across the capital city's urban transport network. Offering comprehensive expertise in multi-modal, multi-operator ticketing systems and technologies, Thales is strongly positioned to play an important part in this future network.
